Jim,I feel that your rant is some what misplaced and wrongly directed at some Aussie from the out back. The die was cast when Blue Star Line name along with its colours were sold to Nedlloyd/Maersk and became a German (the enemy)subsidary of Maersk ,Reederei Blue Star GmbH sticking the colours on any shaped of funnel (last seen on TROJAN & TUSCAN excl. chartered ships). So I hope your not eating your "Weetabix" whist reading this.(Just been sold to the Chinese)at least he is producing jobs and not making redundacies.

You make a fair point about the Aussie not being the whole problem, but as for Weetabix, this is a major problem for the UK: many larger companies are now owned by foreign interests, and while the companies provide jobs and wages, the profits are diverted out of the country. Effectively, UK is moving from being a manufacturing centre, to being a source of employees for countries that own the manufacturing centres, albeit those centres are on UK soil.

Ask a small business man, what is better for his income, being an employee, or running the business...And my apologies for straying off-topic so far, but you know how it is...

Jim B, the Fremantle was my first trip in phase 2. What a fantastic run eh? I spent a months Gadget salary in one run ashore in Waikiki, but who cares? Great times indeed.

Blue Star Line ??

Postby Fraser Darrah » Fri May 04, 2012 11:48 pm

Blue Star Line is not the preserve of the Vestey's unfortunately. Apart from Blue Star Taxis (numerous) , Blue Star Ferries http://www.bluestarferries.gr there is also Blue Star Line A/S. http://www.bluestarline.com/ which have some pretty ancient looking stand-by/supply boats. ~ Fraser

I'd say that's you behind Knocker Norris Jimbo. Jim Thomas was indeed up here for a spell as head engineering lecturer at the Marine College (NAFC Marine Centre) in Scalloway for a while. I was actually going to speak to him about doing a bit of part time lecturing after my hips were sorted, but the next I knew, he'd left and they were advertising the post. Some of my workmates on the tugs tried to get me to apply for it, but I don't really want another full time job, certainly not something as demanding as that. Do you remember a guy called Paul? Merryweather in your year? He turned up as Lloyds surveyor to do the engine survey on the old Stanechakker (our 1978 twinscrew stand-by tug )on a day I was aboard flogging (er I mean DOING) the monthly PM. Spent most of the time yapping about this and that and very little time actually "surveying". She was a good old solid boat. She was sold a couple of years ago and went to Nigeria. Wouldn't have fancied that! She was hot enough down below in Sullom Voe!

BSL Street Sign Sydney

Postby Fraser Darrah » Sat May 12, 2012 10:35 am

Walter Burroughs sent this photo of a Blue Star Line street sign on sale in a Sydney antique shop for ONLY A$ 959! The owner does not know the provenance but believes it dates back to the 1950s but given its later fittings my guess is it is not that old. Maybe Sydneysiders will remember this sign. ~ Fraser

Mr. George Mann 13th May 2012

Postby Fraser Darrah » Mon May 14, 2012 9:33 pm

It is with great sadness to announce that Mr. George Mann rang his final "Finished With Engines" on Sunday 13th May 2012 after a mercifully short illness
whilst surrounded by his family at home.

Help my Memory

Postby Jim Blake » Thu May 17, 2012 9:09 am

In the dark recesses of my mind, I seem to recall a film, I think from the 1970's, in which there was a shot of Dover Harbour, with one of the Blue Star fleet tied up along side. I don't think this is a symptom of senile decay, though that is always a possibility! Anyway, can anyone cast any light on the name of the film, or who acted in it....I seem to remember it being a typical all-action '70's film with someone like Micheal Caine staring and lots of violence, but beyond that I can't be specific

Hello Jim, Have not yet found that one, but an action film starring Richard Harris called "Golden Rendevous" , an Alistair McClean novel was made in the 70's and an unidentified reefer was called the 'Medditerean Star' with some excellant action at sea. I am shortly going to send it to Capt Peter Stacey who may be able to tell us what ship it was.Another film I have seen shows a BSL ship sailing near the Golden Gate -looks like 'Southland or NZ Star' , and that too was an action film.I was told a few Port Line vessels also became cinema stars, and also Bank Line in the film "The Sailor who fell from grace"..made in the 70's.

regards,
