Whereabouts of David Guthrie

Mrs. Julia Stevens (nee. Guthrie) asks:

I am trying to find my brother David Guthrie who was on the Newcastle star in 1964, he left the ship in January 1965 in Australia.
I wondered if anyone remembers him or knows were he is in Australia.

Thank you hoping you can help me.

Budgie,
Looks like Lorne Taylor front row, left of one of the ladies (was he? errm) and Kieth Gladman front row far left with the glasses at a guess.
Looks like Jim Caldwell with his perm back row left ( but you never mentioned him and he would still have been in short trousers then). Bet he hasn't a perm now.
Thanks Colin, hope the hips are bedding in ok, ready to add a shim yet?
Regards,
David Fox

Hi David.
Well spotted for Lorne Taylor at any rate! Keith Gladman is in the 2nd row (with specs) just behind the young lady on the right. Jim C wasn't there that year. He started in '72. he sent me a similar Photo from his year which I hope he'll share to give us all a laugh! I remember Jim as he was always getting into strife of some kind or another in First year. (During my 2nd year) I didn't see Jim again until we were together on Romney for a spell during late '76. But that's another story! I haven't actually seen him again since, but we keep in touch by email and Facebook. Also this forum occasionally. You're fairly right regarding his hairstyle though. I saw a turnip in Tesco's today which had more hair! LOL!
The hips are coming on great and I've been able to get outside and do a lot of stuff that's needed done for a LONG time. Clearing out the Garage for instance. Several trips to the dump later, I can now actually get the car in again! No need for a shim yet, they reckon these will last between 15 and 20 years. The "real" ones started packing up mid 40s, so the man made replacements are fast catching up!
Regards Budgie.

Budgie, you cheeky swine!!! More hair on a turnip indeed!!!! Haha, they say the truth hurts :( Anyway, here's the pic of the class of '72. The only other BSL cadets in that year were Jim Thomas and Don Wainwright. Never met either of them after I left Southampton (I was actually expelled as an undesirable character and did my 3rd phase in South Shields). You told me Jim was up your neck of the woods though. I wonder if Dave Fox can pick me out?..........Regards Jim C.

Getting Chucked Out?

Being chucked out of Southampton is one thing...I got chucked off the Townsville because of a rather rowdy party a bunch of us had in Adelaide (I was a phase 2 gadget at the time). It was *such* a penalty, got transferred to the Fremantle on the Kiwi-West Coast run...so instead of coasting Australia, then who knows, I had to suffer the terrible fate of the Kiwi coast, LA, San Francisco, Vancouver, Honolulu....What a punishment!

I really would rather NOT. The whole subject of the Titanic is a bore. We have been suffocated with enough media hype, without this pratt joining the bandwagon. Lets just remember it as a tragedy, not some event.
I have had numerous emails asking to purchase tickets and giving advise on design!!!! Lets drop the subject. ~ Fraser

I'm sorry you have got TITANIC fatique but if you had read the link you would have seen that the company thats going to own it is Blue Star Line(Pty.) so you may have to include it in your list of ships.

I did read the link, and I think its a bloody cheek! Some johnny-come-lately that owns a few bulkies taking the name of "our" company, and doing it with Chinese-built ships into the bargain. Its just an insult, firstly by someone hoping to make a fast buck out of the memory of the Titanic (which I agree with Fraser, should be left alone), and secondly to the name of a great company...sorry gentlemen <rant mode OFF>
