Dave Milligan's Photographs

Postby Fraser Darrah » Tue Jul 31, 2012 7:07 pm

Dave Milligan's widow, Jackie has very kindly shared some of Dave's photographs from the Gladstone Star in 1966.
It was very kind of her to do so at what must be a difficult time.
The photos can be found here

Very sad to read about Dave Milligans untimely passing and my condolences to his family. Thanks to Jackie for passing on the photos of the 1966 voyage of the Gladstone Star, which brought back some wonderful memories. The engineer cadet shown intending to do harm to Malcolm Leggatt is Clive Purser. Clive and I were first trip cadets fresh from Poplar College. I was fortunate to be Dave's watchkeeping assistant for part of the voyage and his main servant in getting the chilled cans/ bottles from the brine room when allowed. I do not recognise any body in the photo at the Suez Canal, but can vaguely remember the third mate being from the Channel Islands. The captain was Capt Hopper.

I sailed with Dave in 1978 when he was 2nd Engr on the Almeria Star. It was a magic trip, made all the better because we had a great set of Engineers who gelled really well together. We were lead by Chief Engineer Roy Fletcher (accompanied by his lovely wife Rosemary) and Dave, who was the Boss down below. We never met again after 1978, but I particularly remember his wonderful sense of humour and just being an all round good guy. RIP Dave.

Livery

When did the red and black hulls get replaced with grey and blue? Must have been some time in the 60's and 70's? Phased in over dry docking times? Wonder why they changed colours to the away team strip?

The ships hull colour change must have started in 1959 with the "Ulster Star",as all new tonnage built fom that year had the new colour scheme.
I think the "A Boats" were the first ships to be changed and a few of the old colour ships were repainted but it seemed as if all the ships that were scrapped in the 60's and 70's still had the black and red hulls, when they arrived at the breakers yard, one exception being the "Australia Star"(1),she was repainted in 1960.
The rumour for the change of colour was that it reduced the temperature of the hull by a few degrees and was a worthwhile measure, in the case of the "Australia Star"class of ships built in the 1930's it probably was justified as any means of reducing the load on the Brush diesel engines that drove the refrigerating compressors was most welcome.
